Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the volume of the breasts for a curvier, more youthful appearance. About Breast Augmentation
As you age, changes to your body can affect the size and shape of your breasts. With breast augmentation, Dr. Lee can increase your cup size and create a natural-looking appearance. The effective procedure has helped many patients improve their proportions and quality of life; specialists performed the effective procedure more than 304,000 times in 2023. Not only can a breast augmentation enhance the size and shape of the breasts, the procedure can also balance asymmetrical breasts for a more proportional appearance. (1)
Types of Implants
There are several different types of implants that Dr. Lee can use during a breast augmentation depending on your aesthetic goals and your unique anatomy:
- Saline: Salt water-filled implants provide natural-looking volume. Dr. Lee can inflate them after placing them into the breast pocket for more precise customization.
- Silicone: For an implant that closely mimics the appearance and feel of natural breasts, Dr. Lee can place implants that come pre-filled with a silicone gel.
- Gummy Bear: If you would like to increase your breast projection, Dr. Lee can place slightly firmer silicone implants that are filled with a more cohesive gel.
The profile and shape of your desired breasts can be factored into implant placement and selection. Low-profile implants have a broader base, (2) moderate-profile implants can improve the definition of your breasts, and high-profile implants have a narrower base to create the appearance of fuller cleavage.

Candidates
If you are a nonsmoker who is in good overall health, you are likely a good candidate for breast augmentation. Suitable candidates for breast augmentation:
- Are physically healthy
- Do not have any conditions that would affect their ability to heal
- Would like to increase the volume of their breasts or address asymmetry
- Have realistic expectations
If you smoke, you should be willing to stop for approximately 6 weeks before and after the procedure.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, we will ask about your medical history and current medications to determine the best type of procedure for your needs. Please come prepared to discuss your aesthetic goals. Dr. Lee can discuss the best size and type of implant for your needs and whether he should place the implant above or below the chest muscle for your desired appearance.
Dr. Lee spends time during every consultation to discuss your body goals and create a treatment plan for your needs. If you have additional body goals, he can also recommend other treatments.
At New Life Cosmetic Surgery we offer Crisalix imaging to help determine the implant size that fits best for you. Prior to your appointment you can go to the Crisalix website (https://my.crisalix.com/signup/newlifecosmetics) and we can start planning your transformation. Crisalix is a virtual program that allows Dr Lee to simulate what size implants that will be best for you. You can send us three pictures and we will send you the simulations prior to your consultation.

Preparation
In the weeks leading up to your procedure, we recommend that you prioritize your health and take good care of your body. Each patient will receive specialized instructions on how to prepare for breast augmentation, but you can expect to:
- Stop smoking 6 weeks before and after your procedure (if applicable)
- Cease taking medications and supplements that thin the blood
- Take good care of your skin and avoid excessive sun exposure
- Arrange for time off work
- Ask someone you trust to drive you home afterward
Procedure
During your procedure, our team will cleanse your skin and administer anesthesia. We use IV conscious sedation rather than general anesthesia; IV sedation allows for a shorter recovery time. Dr. Lee will mark your skin for the procedure and make thin incisions along the natural curves of your breasts. Dr. Lee will strategically place your implant to help you achieve your desired look. Implants can be made either below the chest muscles (submuscular) or below the mammary glands (subglandular). (3)
- Submuscular: He can place the implants behind the chest muscle, reducing the visibility of the implant and helping slimmer patients achieve a smoother breast shape.
- Subglandular: He can position the implant in front of the chest muscle which can help you achieve a fuller breast shape and more definition along the inframammary crease, or the area where the breast meets the torso.
Breast augmentation typically takes about an hour, and you can return home after a monitoring period to rest.
Recovery
During the first few days, it is common to experience some mild swelling or discomfort around the incisions while your skin heals. Dr. Lee will provide recommendations for over-the-counter medications. You will need to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Lee the day after your procedure so that he can monitor your healing progress. He will also remove the bandages placed the day before at this time.
You should not lift anything heavier than five pounds during the first week of your recovery. Dr. Lee will also provide a supportive compression bra for you to wear for the first few weeks to help your body heal. Most patients can return to work within 1 week, but patients with physically demanding jobs may need to wait longer.
Results
After the procedure, you can enjoy fuller, softer, natural-looking breasts. You can also enjoy better-fitting bras, clothing, and bathing suits. Results will be long lasting, as most implants do not need to be replaced until about 15-20 years after their placement.
Breast Augmentation and Lift
Although Dr. Lee can increase the volume of your breasts with implants, the procedure does not remove excess skin or reposition your breasts. With a breast lift, we can raise the position of the breasts and remove excess, droopy skin for a smoother, curvier look. With a few small incisions, Dr. Lee can tighten your skin and remove excess tissue. Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift is an effective way to address two concerns during one appointment. We can perform a physical exam during your consultation to determine the best type of procedure for your needs.

FAQ
How long do breast implants for breast augmentation last?
You can enjoy the results of a breast augmentation for many years. Many implants can last for up to 15-20 years.
Will I experience pain after breast augmentation?
It is normal to experience discomfort after a breast augmentation, but we can prescribe medication for a more comfortable recovery. Your surgeon will provide you with detailed recovery instructions.
Can I breastfeed after getting implants for breast augmentation?
Breastfeeding is still possible after a breast augmentation. However, we recommend that you wait until you are finished having children to receive implants because pregnancy can affect your results.
What happens if my implants rupture?
If your implants rupture, we can replace them! You will most likely be able to tell if your saline implants rupture, as the breast will be noticeably changed. However, silicone implants require regular MRI check-ups to determine if the implants have a leak and need to be replaced.
