About Liposuction

There are many benefits to a liposuction procedure. Liposuction helps remove stubborn fat pockets found in the body that haven’t responded to lifestyle changes such as exercise or dieting. A liposuction treatment can help enhance confidence by creating a more proportional body shape and enhancing your natural curves. Liposuction can also be used for reconstructive purposes to help manage lipomas, lipedema, macromastia in women, and even gynecomastia in men. (4)

Candidates

All candidates interested in a liposuction procedure should be in good health without any underlying conditions that may impair the healing process. Candidates interested in undergoing liposuction are those who experience stubborn fat deposits throughout the body that do not respond to lifestyle changes such as dieting or exercise. Candidates who smoke should be prepared to quit before the procedure and remain tobacco and nicotine-free until fully healed. Tobacco and nicotine products can impair the body’s ability to heal quickly.

How to Prepare for Liposuction

To properly prepare for a liposuction procedure, all candidates should ensure they are eating properly and staying hydrated. Dr. Lee will provide each individual with a personalized list of instructions to help them prepare properly for their procedure. Patients who smoke should make an effort to quit 4-6 weeks before their liposuction. Dr. Lee may ask certain patients to avoid certain medications, such as blood thinners, at least two weeks before the procedure. Some patients may need assistance for the first 24-48 hours following their procedure, so we recommend patients pre-arrange transportation and assistance following the procedure. Patients also find that it can be helpful to prepare their recovery space. Patients should also schedule time off from work and other commitments.

Procedure

At the beginning of the procedure, the patient will be put under conscious sedation to ensure comfort. Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation means that you will be breathing without assistance, but will sleep throughout the entirety of your treatment.

Once the patient is relaxed and asleep, Dr. Lee will make an incision at the designated treatment site. A specialized cannula will be inserted into the incision and used to help break up stubborn pockets of fat. Dr. Lee will then carefully sculpt and shape the body to match the patient’s aesthetic goals and create a natural-looking result. After finishing treatment, the incisions are closed. The procedure can take anywhere between 1-4 hours depending on the conditions being treated and the discussed treatment plan.

Recovery

Patients should follow all post-operative instructions given to them by Dr. Lee to ensure a smooth recovery. It’s very important to wear the faja compression garment that is recommended by Dr. Lee. Also, lymphatic massages starting as early as 1 day after the surgery will help decrease inflammation, reduce pain, and lead to the best aesthetic results. The day following the procedure, Dr. Lee will meet with you to help take off the bandaging in the treatment area. Following the procedure, patients will likely experience mild discomfort and soreness, similar to a muscle ache. This discomfort can be managed through the use of pain medication until the discomfort subsides. Patients should avoid physical activity, however light walking is encouraged during the first week. Between 2-4 weeks after your procedure, the bruising and swelling will start to subside and patients will be able to return to work if their job isn’t strenuous. Most patients should be able to resume exercising during this time. The full results of the liposuction will be seen 3-6 months after the procedure, once the swelling resolves.

Results

The full results of your procedure will be more apparent 3-6 months after the procedure. Patients will be able to see a newly shaped and contoured figure. The results are long-lasting and appear natural. Once the targeted fat cells are removed, they will not grow back. However, patients should exercise regularly to help maintain the full results of their procedure.
