About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a transformative procedure designed to enhance the natural contours of the breast, restoring volume lost to weight fluctuations or aging, and improving overall symmetry. (1) Dr. Lee offers saline, silicone, and gummy bear implants, each providing a distinct feel and aesthetic. Saline implants are known for their adjustable volume and biocompatible filler (sterile salt water), while silicone and gummy bear implants are prized for their cohesive gel material that closely mimics the look and feel of natural breast tissue. The benefits extend beyond physical enhancement, often leading to a significant boost in self-confidence and a more proportional silhouette.
As an alternative to traditional implants, Dr. Lee also specializes in breast augmentation with fat grafting. This technique involves harvesting your own fat via liposuction from donor areas, such as the abdomen or thighs. He carefully purifies the harvested fat before strategically injecting it into the breasts to enhance both volume and shape. This approach offers a natural-feeling enhancement and is an excellent option for individuals seeking a more subtle increase in volume or for those who prefer to use their own tissue rather than synthetic implants. It’s important to understand that you will only see a half cup size increase with one round of fat transfer.
Dr. Lee will perform your breast augmentation under IV sedation as opposed to general anesthesia, which eliminates the need for a breathing tube and significantly reduces post-surgical side effects and recovery time. During the procedure, Dr. Lee typically places his incision at the inframammary fold, allowing for an easily concealable scar. He will place the implant or fat graft meticulously to ensure symmetrical, natural-looking results.
Week One
The first week of recovery is the most critical period for rest and healing. You may experience some soreness, swelling, and a feeling of tightness in your chest, especially around the incision sites. Dr. Lee will provide you with a surgical bra or compression garment to support the healing tissue and minimize swelling. He will also provide you with recovery peptides, which have anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative properties that promote healing throughout your recovery. (2)
During this phase, proper sleeping habits are paramount. You must sleep exclusively on your back with your head and torso elevated at a 30-to-45 degree angle. This position facilitates lymphatic drainage, reduces localized edema, and prevents accidental pressure on the fresh incisions and newly placed implants. Using a wedge pillow or several firm pillows in a stacked formation can help you maintain this alignment throughout the night, ensuring that you do not roll over onto your side or stomach.
It is essential to avoid any strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or extending your arms overhead. Most patients find that they can monitor their discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter medication as recommended by our team. Staying hydrated and taking short, gentle walks can help promote healthy blood flow.
Nutrition and Hydration
Fueling your body with the right nutrients is just as important as physical rest. Dr. Lee advocates for an anti-inflammatory diet rich in antioxidants, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Incorporating foods like leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, and walnuts can help manage post-operative inflammation and support tissue repair. (3) Protein intake is especially critical during the first month, as amino acids are the building blocks of new collagen and skin cells needed for incision closure. Proper hydration is equally essential. Water is necessary for maintaining blood volume, flushing out toxins, and ensuring that nutrients reach the surgical site efficiently.
Weeks Two and Three
During the second and third weeks, you will likely notice a significant reduction in swelling and discomfort. Most patients can return to light desk work and daily activities that do not involve heavy exertion. While you may start to feel more like your usual self, it is important to continue wearing your support garment as instructed. You should still avoid vigorous exercise and lifting objects heavier than a few pounds. Dr. Lee will monitor your progress during follow-up appointments to ensure the incisions are healing properly and the implants are settling into their desired position.
At this stage, Dr. Lee may recommend beginning gentle lymphatic drainage massage. These specialized movements involve very light, rhythmic pressure applied to the skin to encourage the movement of lymph fluid away from the breast area and toward the underarm and collarbone lymph nodes. (4) This helps to further reduce residual swelling and can soften the appearance of the breasts as they heal.
Weeks Four and Five
By weeks four and five, many of the early physical restrictions can begin to lift. You may start incorporating light cardiovascular exercise, such as walking on a treadmill or using a stationary bike, provided you have received clearance from Dr. Lee. The implants will continue to drop into place and “bloom,” a process where they settle lower into the breast pocket and the lower pole of the breast takes on a more natural, rounded appearance. Any residual bruising should be mostly resolved, though some internal swelling may still be present as the tissues continue to adapt to the new volume.
Week Six and Beyond
At the six-week mark, most patients are cleared to resume all normal activities, including high-impact exercise and upper body workouts. Your incisions will continue to mature and fade over the coming months. While the majority of the healing has occurred, it can take up to six months to a year for the breasts to reach their final shape and for the scars to fully soften. Regular follow-up visits with the New Life team remain vital to ensure the long-term health and integrity of your implants. You can now begin to enjoy the full results of your breast augmentation with confidence.
Follow-Up Appointments
A hallmark of the New Life patient experience is our comprehensive post-operative care. We schedule your follow-up appointments at key intervals, typically at one week, three weeks, six weeks, three months, and six months, to ensure that your recovery is progressing beautifully. During these visits, Dr. Lee or a highly trained staff member will carefully inspect your incision sites to monitor the healing process and head off any signs of infection or irregular scarring.
These appointments are also an opportunity for you to ask questions as your activity levels increase. We will assess the positioning and settling of your implants, providing guidance on transitioning from your compression garment to supportive sports bras or standard undergarments. Our team takes great pride in celebrating your progress with you, and we will be here to support you every step of the way.
Results
The long-term outcomes of breast augmentation are designed to provide many years of satisfaction. As the implants settle and the surrounding tissue relaxes, the results will look and feel increasingly natural. It is important to remember that while implants are durable, they are not lifetime devices and may eventually require replacement or removal due to natural aging or changes in your aesthetic goals. By maintaining a stable weight and following long-term care instructions, you can preserve your beautiful results for a decade or longer.

How should I sleep during recovery?
You should sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated for the first 7-10 days to reduce swelling and prevent pressure on the implants.
When can I resume exercise after recovery?
Dr. Lee encourages gentle walking right away. Moderate cardio can resume at 4 weeks, while heavy lifting and high-impact activities typically require 6 weeks.
Will I be able to breastfeed with implants?
Most women are able to breastfeed successfully, though it is important to discuss your family plans with Dr. Lee during your consultation so he is aware of your priorities.
How long do implants last?
While not considered lifetime devices, modern implants are designed for durability and often last at least 15 years or more before replacement needs to be considered.
